The Textile Art Exhibition entitled " Selembar Benang Menjalin Alam"- "A Thread That Links The World" -World Eco-Fiber and Textile Art.(WEFT) first premiered in Kuala Lumpur in May 2006; and traveled to India for the UNESCO Natural Dyes Symposium in Hyderabad, India and then to New Delhi in February 2007. It is curated by renowned textile expert and designer, Edric Ong of Malaysia.
Over 100 items of exquisite textiles from the 10 ASEAN countries will be showcased under the categories of Handwoven, Hand tie-and-dye; Hand-embroidered ; Hand painted and printed; Hand embellished; and contemporary expressions. All the textiles on show are from natural fibers such as silk, cotton, hemp, bark cloth, banana fiber, pineapple fiber, and other natural fibers. Most of them are also using natural dyes.
At the launching of the exhibition on 3rd April, several top fashion designers will be showcasing their latest creations . They are:

PENPORN JUNCHAYA (THAILAND)- Tai Lue textiles and brocades
THONG LAHA SINH CO; TAIKEO TEXTILE CO; HAI GNEUN MAI KHAM (LAOS)- Laotian textiles
AIDAI ASANGULOVA (CACSA, KRYGISTAN)- Silk and wool felts
MIYOKO KAWAHITO (JAPAN)- Natural dyed silk textiles
NARDA CAPUYAN (PHILIPPINES)-Cordillera ikat textiles
On 4th April, renowned Malaysian batik artist Michael Lim will be demonstrating his batik painting to the public alongside Indonesian artist Achmad Sopandi who will show the technique of textile painting with hematite dyes.
The fashion show on 3rd April is by invitation only; while the demonstration on 4th April and the exhibition is open to the public (free admission) |
