(11) Relationship between Japan and ASEAN
(a) Relationship between Japan and ASEAN
The 1st Summit was held in Luala Lumpur in 1997 attended by the then-Japanese Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda. The meeting has been held annually since 1997.

(b) Ministerial Meetings
(i) Japan - ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting
First held in Pattaya, Thailand in 1978. Since 1979, Foreign Ministers meetings between Japan and ASEAN have taken place annually as part of ASEAN PMC.
(ii) ASEAN Economic Ministers - Minister of Trade and Industry Consultations (AEM - METI)
Upon the 1991 invitation from ASEAN, Economic Ministers from Japan and ASEAN have met annually since 1992 (as part of AEM) to exchange opinions on comprehensive economic issues ranging from the international economy in general to programs of industrial cooperation.
(iii) Japan - ASEAN Finance Ministers Meeting
Regularly convenes (as agreed in the December 1997 meeting) to exchange opinions on the region's economic and financial issues.
(iv) AEM - METI Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee (AMEICC)
Positioned under AEM - METI (attended by the Japanese Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry). Aimed at strengthening industrial cooperation between Japan and ASEAN, enhancing the industrial competitiveness of ASEAN nations and supporting industrial development of new member states. The first meeting was held in Bangkok in November 1998, and the second one was in Singapore in October 1999.
